Dear colleagues, co-workers, and friends,

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the organization team of PacificVis 2020 has decided not to host a physical meeting in Tianjin, China. Instead, the conference’s opening and keynote address will be held live via Zoom. Presentations of all technical papers (including full papers, Notes papers, and workshop papers) will be pre-recorded, and Q&A will be conducted asynchronously via Vimeo and Youku.

Registration for non-presenting participants is not required, so we welcome everyone to join this great event.

This year, we invited Prof. Holger Theisel from University Magdeburg as our keynote speaker, who will present his experience on carefully choosing optimal parameters to achieve successful analysis. The keynote will be held right after the opening session, and the discussion will follow.

Opening and Keynote: June 3, 12:00 PM, Beijing time (GMT+8) via Zoom (https://zoom.us/).

Zoom link and password can be requested via pvis2020@gmail.com. In the application email, please kindly provide us the following information:

Dear authors of PacificVis 2020 papers,

We announced earlier that the conference will need to be postponed due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus. The safety and well-being of all conference participants is our priority. We have monitored the developments and now decided to host the conference as an all-virtual platform on June 3, with interactive discussions stretching to June 5. Your availability on June 3 is not mandatory, but we hope that most of you will be able to join the virtual event! The proceedings and invited TVCG articles will be published as planned.

For making your contributions visible and to provide a basis for discussions, we ask all authors of full papers and Visualization Notes papers to record a video of their paper presentation (up to 20 min for full papers; up to 10 min for Notes papers). Please submit the video by May 20 (detailed preparation and submission instructions are listed in Guidelines ). We plan to make the videos available to the authors of the conference and, with your permission, publicly on a video platform. The platform will also be used for comment-based online discussions stretching from June 3 to June 5. You will be able to choose between the following two options:
Option A: Public video availability (recommended!) - your video will be available publicly on a video platform (with opportunity for a public online discussion) and accessible for conference participants.
Option B: Restricted video availability - your video will be accessible for conference participants only (feedback/questions can be sent by email).

Although the conference will not take place physically, we have to cover the inevitable cost of publishing and already ongoing preparations. This is why at least one author of a full paper and a Visualization Notes paper will be required to register for the conference at a reduced rate - this can be considered as a “publication fee” and is necessary to support the financial health of the conference series.

As one highlight of the virtual event, the conference will feature a keynote by Holger Theisel (Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany) about “ Optimal Reference Frames, Scaling and Features in Visualization ” . While the keynote, like the other talks of the conference, will be available as a video, we plan to host an interactive Q&A session with the keynote speaker on June 3. More information on the keynote can be found in Keynote, and we will inform you about the logistics of the respective Q&A session soon.

We are sorry that we won’t be able to meet you in person for the conference in Tianjin, China, but we hope to provide you the best experience possible under the current circumstances. We are looking forward to seeing you online on June 3!

The 13th IEEE Pacific Visualization Symposium (PacificVis 2020) will be held in Tianjin, China during April 14 to 17, 2020. As part of PacificVis, workshop/tutorial sessions will be held on April 14, with the Symposium starting from April 15.

Visualization has become an increasingly important research area due to its wide range of applications in many disciplines. PacificVis is an IEEE sponsored international visualization symposium held in the Asia-Pacific region, with the objective to foster greater exchange between visualization researchers and practitioners, and to draw more researchers in the Asia-Pacific region to enter this rapidly growing area of research.

Previous PacificVis symposia were held in Kyoto (2008), Beijing (2009), Taipei (2010), Hong Kong (2011), Songdo (2012), Sydney (2013), Yokohama (2014), Zhejiang (2015), Taipei (2016), Seoul (2017), Kobe (2018), and Bangkok (2019), all sponsored by IEEE VGTC.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are central to the goals of the IEEE Computer Society and all of its conferences. Equity at its heart is about removing barriers, biases, and obstacles that impede equal access and opportunity to succeed. Diversity is fundamentally about valuing human differences and recognizing diverse talents. Inclusion is the active engagement of Diversity and Equity.

A goal of the IEEE Computer Society is to foster an environment in which all individuals are entitled to participate in any IEEE Computer Society activity free of discrimination. For this reason, the IEEE Computer Society is firmly committed to team compositions in all sponsored activities, including but not limited to, technical committees, steering committees, conference organizations, standards committees, and ad hoc committees that display Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

IEEE Computer Society meetings, conferences and workshops must provide a welcoming, open and safe environment, that embraces the value of every person, regardless of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, religion, national origin, ancestry, or disability. All individuals are entitled to participate in any IEEE Computer Society activity free of discrimination, including harassment based on any of the above factors.

IEEE believes that science, technology, and engineering are fundamental human activities, for which openness, international collaboration, and the free flow of talent and ideas are essential. Its meetings, conferences, and other events seek to enable engaging, thought provoking conversations that support IEEE’s core mission of advancing technology for humanity. Accordingly, IEEE is committed to providing a safe, productive, and welcoming environment to all participants, including staff and vendors, at IEEE-related events.

IEEE has no tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or bullying in any form at IEEE-related events. All participants have the right to pursue shared interests without harassment or discrimination in an environment that supports diversity and inclusion. Participants are expected to adhere to these principles and respect the rights of others.

IEEE seeks to provide a secure environment at its events. Participants should report any behavior inconsistent with the principles outlined here, to on site staff, security or venue personnel, or to eventconduct@ieee.org.
